Are you a mom looking to start freelancing or working remotely from home? I’ve found the most success through the Upwork platform and I believe that you can too. Starting your virtual career can be life-changing! I replaced my 9-5 salary working remotely through Upwork in just 3 months, and I want to help you do the same.
Upwork is my favorite site to get new clients from. They have so many different job postings for different positions like Web & Software Development, Administrative Support, Marketing, Customer Service, Data Science & Analytics, Paralegal, and even Engineering & Architecture.
What Is A Freelancer?
A freelancer is someone who is considered to be an independent contractor that is hired by different companies to complete jobs that someone in-house is not able to complete. Freelancers are not considered employees and they do not work in their client’s office (usually) and are responsible for providing their own equipment and handle their own taxes.
Why Become A Freelancing Mom?
How does having the freedom to work wherever you want while doing what you love sound? For me, it was just what the doctor ordered! I was working 60-80 hours/week at my regular office job and had nothing left to give my daughter when I got home after a long working day. As a single mom I wanted to find a way to be able to be more present in my daughter’s life and be able to afford my bills, and that is exactly what I did.

How To Be A Successful Freelancing Mom – Step 1 [Plan]
Planning is the very first step you need to take. You need to see what industry your area of expertise and skills would benefit from. The best way to start the process is to structure an outline of your strengths and weaknesses and create a specialized profile highlighting your strengths. In this first step, I want you to picture your ideal virtual dream job, what would you be doing? Do you have these skills now or is it something you need to work on?
Keep in mind, Upwork prefers to have you specialize in certain industries and offers you the ability to have specific profiles highlighting your skills in those particular areas. Flexjobs determined that the industries that have had the most job openings in 2018 were Computer & IT, Accounting & Finance, HR & Recruiting, Editing, Proofreading & Writing, Administrative, Project Management, Data Entry, Analyst, Software Development, & Technical Support.
Creating Your Upwork Profile
Once you are finished with your plan, it’s time to create your Upwork profile and update your portfolio. The difference between your Upwork profile and Upwork portfolio can be confusing when you first get started, but your Upwork profile is what highlights your job history and work qualities, and your Upwork portfolio provides examples to your potential new clients of your previous work, such as websites and other documents. Keep in mind, if you are providing examples of work provided for previous clients, you will need permission to upload these to your portfolio.
As a top-rated freelancing mom, I’ve found the best results with showcasing my profile in two different sections. The first paragraph should highlight your qualities and why you should be hired and the second paragraph should break down your skills. Remember to use the strengths you outlined in Step 1 for your profile.
